My Journey to Become a Young Professional Working in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sector

Hello everyone, my name’s Kit Vanny. I’m a fourth-year student of the field Water and Environmental Engineering. I am the only girl in my village who studies engineering while other girl, they chose to study accounting, marketing or management and so on. So, what push me to study engineering?
When I decided to study this major, I got a lot of negative mind set from my neighbor. They said that you should not study engineering because it is a boy’s major. You should not study far from home because you are a girl and girl no need to study a lot. But I never put their words in my mind. I am the owner of my life, so there’s only me who knows what I want to do.
I am a countryside girl who wants to pursue higher education in the city. I chose this major because I want to be a part of solutions for the water and environmental problem that I and people in my village face. What I can do now is to study hard. After I graduate, there will be one more human resource in this sector. So, I can help people in rural community, especially girls and disability people by working with company or NGO of this field. Moreover, I have put mission in my mind. I want to help people in province to access clean water and sanitation. And I will continue this mission for other rural provinces.
