My Journey to Become a Young Professional Working in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sector
Sreyla VET
My name is Vet Sreyla and I am a female student majoring in Water Engineering at ITC. It was not easy for me to study engineering because I had to go through the criticism from my neighbors that they thought engineering was not suitable for women. They even told my family that children should not come to study in Phnom Penh far away and learn man skills.
I decided to study engineering, so it would not only build my confidence or knowledge but also to change society’s negative thinking that engineering is not suitable for women.
By hard-working for a few years, my achievement is getting a scholarship from WaterAid Cambodia. It made my parents proud of me and they don’t spend too much money supporting my study as before. My mission is to work on the water sector to make it grow.
I want to help the people in the remote area. Obviously my villagers who this day do not have access to clean water. I can help by sharing knowledge and explaining to them about water and sanitation issues, because of course people in remote areas are less aware of this issue. I can also post the situation in the village on social media for other water workers to see.
