My Journey to Become a Young Professional Working in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sector

សួស្តី ខ្ញុំឈ្មោះ ប៉ាំង ស្រីនិច សព្វថ្ងៃគឺជានិស្សិតមួយរូបផ្នែកវិស្វកម្មទឹក និងបរិស្ថាន។ តើអ្នកទាំងអស់គ្នាមានដឹងទេថា ហេតុអ្វីខ្ញុំសម្រេចចិត្តរៀនជំនាញវិស្វកម្ម ដែលមនុស្សភាគច្រើនចាត់ទុកជាជំនាញមនុស្សប្រុស? មានមនុស្សមួយចំនួនបាននិយាយមកកាន់ខ្ញុំថា “តើកាលដែលខ្ញុំចង់រៀនជំនាញវិស្វកម្មហ្នឹង គិតថាខ្លួនឯងនឹងអាចទៅរួចឬ? តើអាចស៊ូបានប៉ុន្មាន? បើខ្លួនជាស្រីហើយរាងតូចល្អិតចឹងទៅធ្វើអ្វីកើត យ៉ាងណាក៏មិនអាចទៅរួចដូចគេមនុស្សប្រុសទេ គួរតែទៅរៀនអ្វីដែលស្រីៗភាគច្រើនគេរៀនទៅ”។
តែដោយសារតែការមើលស្រាលនេះហើយ វាបានក្លាយជាកម្លាំងចិត្តមួយដែលធ្វើឱ្យខ្ញុំមានចិត្តតស៊ូ ដើម្បីលុបបំបាត់ការមើលស្រាលនេះ។ ខ្ញុំបានប្រឡងជាប់ចូលរៀនក្នុងសាលាវិស្វករល្បីមួយ ហើយលើសនោះទៅទៀតនោះ ខ្ញុំបានជាប់អាហារូបករណ៍ ដោយរៀនមិនបង់ប្រាក់ទៀតផង។ អ្វីដែលខ្ញុំតាំងចិត្តនោះ គឺខ្ញុំត្រូវបញ្ចប់ការសិក្សាដោយជោគជ័យ និងស្វែងរកការងារល្អមួយដែលអាចដោះស្រាយបញ្ហាសង្គមបាន ជាពិសេសនោះ គឺវិស័យទឹកស្អាត ដោយសារខ្ញុំយល់ថាស្ត្រីមានតួនាទីសំខាន់ណាស់នៅក្នុងវិស័យទឹកស្អាតនិងអនាម័យ ប៉ុន្តែពួកគាត់ហាក់មិនសូវទទួលបានសិទ្ធិ និងឱកាសពេញលេញនៅឡើយទេនៅក្នុងវិស័យនេះ។
ម្យ៉ាង តើយើងជាស្ត្រីយើងគួរតែពង្រឹងសិទ្ធិក៏ដូចជាឱកាសនោះដោយខ្លួនឯង ឬត្រូវចាំអ្នកដទៃផ្តល់ឱ្យយើង។ ជាស្ត្រីជំនាន់ថ្មី យើងត្រូវធ្វើវាដោយខ្លួនឯង កុំចាំគេផ្តល់ឱ្យយើង។ ដូច្នេះ យើងត្រូវលើកទឹកចិត្តស្ត្រីគ្រប់រូបឱ្យហ៊ានជំនះ និងហ៊ានដើរទៅមុខជាមួយអ្វីដែលគេចង់ធ្វើ។
Hi, my name is Srey Nich and I am currently a student in water and environmental engineering. Do you all know why I decided to study engineering, which most people consider as a man’s skill? Some people have said to me, “When I wanted to learn engineering, did I think of what I could do? How much can I withstand? And I as a weak woman can’t do anything as a man does, I should study any major that is suitable for a woman”.
But because of this contempt, it became a force for me to eliminate those concepts from our society. I passed the exam at a prestigious engineering school and, moreover, I was provided a scholarship from WaterAid Cambodia.
What I determined to do after graduation is to find a good job that can solve social problems, especially the water sector, because I understand that women play a very important role in the water and sanitation sector, but they do not seem to have many full rights and opportunities in this field yet. On the other hand, as women, should we create the rights as well as the opportunities for ourselves, or should we wait for others to give us? As a new generation of women, we must do it ourselves, not waiting for others to give us. Therefore, we must encourage all women to dare to overcome and move forward with what they want to do.
